Genre browsing for US formats: from CHR to talk to sports

How to use genre filters as listening jobs—energy, information, fandom—rather than rigid industry silos.

Formats2026-05-02 · 8 min

Industry format names (CHR, AC, country, news/talk, sports) are useful shorthand. In a directory, treat géneros as jobs to be done: wake-up energy, focus music, civic information, game-night fandom.

Start with the job, open two candidate stations in radios, and save the winner in Favoritos. For information jobs, jump through noticias so you are not guessing which music station runs a weak five-minute newscast.

Ownership context—iHeart scale, other commercial groups, NPR member stations—explains resources, not your preference. Prefer the host who respects your time.

Cross genre with regiones to catch Spanish-language music scenes or Midwestern sports talk that national tags bury. Use Top after you already know your job, not before.

Formats evolve: today’s CHR may lean more rhythmic than last decade’s. Re-audition yearly.

Genre browsing is how you escape the homepage of famous brands. The US dial is wide; filters are the flashlight.
